PEAKS

High Peaks Overlook on Gore.jpg

GORE MOUNTAIN

At 3,590 feet, Gore is the tallest peak in Warren County with a great view of the High Peaks about a half-mile from the summit on the new Schaefer Trail built by former NYS park ranger Steve Ovitt. Along much of the 9.4-mile round-trip trail you'll hike alongside the waterfalls of Roaring Brook.

CRANE MOUNTAIN

While Crane's 1,345-foot elevation gain is only half that of Gore's, its gnarly, rock-strewn trails make it every bit as challenging. This massive peak's open summit will provide stunning views of Garnet Lake, Bullhead Mountain, and the vast Wilcox Lake Wild Forest.

PEAKED MOUNTAIN

This 7.2 mile round-trip hike with 1,381 feet of elevation will take you a mile along the shore of 13th Lake, then turn sharply for a 500-foot ascent along Peaked Mountain Brook to Peaked Pond. You'll find there two campsites and a stark view of the steep 675-foot climb that lies in store.

HADLEY MOUNTAIN

A substantial out-and-back hike of 3.2 miles with an elevation gain of 1,450 feet, Hadley offers a historic 1916 fire tower and expansive views of the Great Sacandaga Lake and many surrounding peaks. The trail is relatively steep on its lower reaches with a considerable amount of bare rock.

HACKENSACK MOUNTAIN

With an elevation gain of 557 feet, Hackensack offers a sweeping view of Warrensburg, parts of the Hudson and Schroon, and such surrounding peaks as Huckleberry Mountain, Pine Mountain and the Three Sisters.

BARTONVILLE MOUNTAIN

This short hike east of the Northway offers a spectacular view of Brant Lake and its surrounding peaks. While it’s not in the Hudson River corridor, it’s part of the First Wilderness because the Schroon River runs into the Hudson.

BALM OF GILEAD MOUNTAIN

Located on the east side of 13th Lake opposite Peaked Mountain, this short, family-friendly hike requires an elevation gain of just 433 feet but delivers extraordinary views of the Siamese Ponds Wilderness.

MOXHAM MOUNTAIN

Spectacular views can be enjoyed most of the way to this 2418-foot summit just over the Warren County line in Essex. Its 5.5-mile out-and-back trail requires 1300 feet of elevation.
