Identifying Sites for Affordable Housing
The Skidmore team will focus its build-out analysis on the Town of Warrensburg.
Confronting a severe shortage of rental and single family homes for the general workforce, seniors and lower income persons, the Planning Department and EDC Warren County will embark on a Housing Needs Analysis with the help of four students in Skidmore College’s Advanced GIS class.
Avery Blake, Jenna Wilhem, Sophie Bean, and Annie Kiernan are developing a “build-out analysis” for the Town of Warrensburg. This is a spatial analysis used to estimate the amount and location of future development that could occur within a specified area or community after taking into consideration development regulations and land use constraints.
“Analyzing zoning regulations and constraints, we aim to make a 3D model that will illustrate areas to potentially develop affordable housing,” said the students in joint statement. ”Thus far we have conducted initial research and data collection to construct boundaries and expectations. “
Given constraints of slope, wetlands, water bodies, septic availability, current land use and zoning regulations, the students aim to determine how many additional housing units can be developed and where those housing units could be located.
Working with GIS Administrator Sara Frankenfeld and Assistant Planner Ethan Gaddy, the students aim to present their findings to the Warrensburg Town Board in May.
