LAKES AND PONDS
Consider the following trails to lakes and ponds in the First Wilderness as great candidates not only for hiking but also for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Crab Pond. An easy, relatively flat hike of 5.6 miles in the Pharaoh Lakes Wilderness. It winds through fairy-like woods along Mill Brook to a pretty pond with a lovely campsite.
Hour Pond. A 6.8 mile hike of moderate difficulty in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness. It follows the Peaked Mountain Trail along Thirteenth Lake, and then turns to follow a connector trail along a pretty brook. The pond can also be accessed via the Old Farm Trailhead, giving this the potential for a loop hike.
John Pond and Clear Pond. An easy, relatively flat 4.7 mile loop in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness.
Puffer Pond. A moderately difficult 11-mile hike that leads into to the interior of the Siamese Ponds Wilderness.
Round Pound. A moderately difficult hike of 4.6 miles in Wilcox Lake Wild Forest. With an elevation gain of 560 feet, the trail is not much more than a herd path in places and requires a bit of bushwhacking.
Siamese Ponds. Trails range in length from 3.9 miles to 18.5 miles depending on the trailhead selected.
Wilcox Lake. A relatively flat 5 mile round-trip hike of moderate difficulty. It begins on an old, deeply rutted road that starts at East Stony Creek, crosses a suspension bridge, and ascends a hill to the lake.
